Courtnay Pope, Department Chair of Business Professions, is a strong advocate for Open Educational Resources and the role they play in making education more accessible and student-centered. When she first explored OER, she was impressed by both the volume and quality of available materials鈥攑articularly the business resources developed by Rice University. Her perspective shifted even further when she saw the immediate impact on her students: no longer forced to delay coursework due to the cost of textbooks, students could begin learning on day one, regardless of their financial situation. For Pope, this shift has been transformative, removing a significant source of stress and allowing students to focus more fully on their education. As an instructor, she values the flexibility OER provides, freeing her from the constraints of a single textbook and allowing her to curate the best possible materials to meet her course outcomes. This adaptability also keeps her classes fresh and engaging by incorporating a variety of sources. Reflecting on her own experiences as a student, Pope takes pride in being part of a movement that reduces financial barriers and expands opportunities for others. She also emphasizes that OER鈥檚 impact extends beyond the classroom, opening the door for lifelong learning by making high-quality educational resources freely available to anyone, anywhere.
