Dropping Or Withdrawing?

Texas law (TEC 51.907) limits students to six dropped courses during their entire undergraduate career at Texas public colleges and universities.

If you drop a course after the census date, it may count toward your 6-drop limit. Once you reach that limit, you cannot drop additional courses unless you qualify for an exception.

This rule applies to all Texas public institutions, not just the one you're currently attending. So, all drops taken across schools are counted together.

It鈥檚 important to use your drops wisely. If you use all six and later need to drop for a serious reason, you may not be allowed to without meeting exception requirements.

  • Documented medical or mental health issues
  • Family emergencies
  • Active military service
  • Other extenuating circumstances (with documentation)

If you think you may qualify for an exception, speak with your advisor as soon as possible.
