Professor Geneo Roberts, MSN, RN, of the Associate Degree Nursing program, has embraced Open Educational Resources as a powerful way to support student learning and remove barriers to education. When he first began exploring OER, he was struck by the wide variety of materials available and how well-organized many of the resources were. In his classroom, he quickly saw the impact—students were able to search for and locate information quickly and efficiently within the online materials, something that aligns well with today’s tech-savvy learners who rely on digital tools to enhance their education. For Professor Roberts, OER also creates new opportunities as an instructor, allowing him to easily incorporate the latest evidence-based practice guides and adapt materials to better fit his lessons and students’ needs. Through the process, he has deepened his understanding of copyright and collaboration, working closely with the Learning Resources Center to make the most of open materials. To him, being part of the OER movement means helping remove barriers so students have greater opportunities to learn, grow, and succeed—while also demonstrating that openly available resources can be both current and incredibly valuable in higher education.
