Olga Salazar, Department Chair of Kinesiology, values Open Educational Resources for the meaningful impact they have on both student success and the overall learning experience. When she first explored OER, she was struck by the abundance of high-quality resources available—more than enough to build engaging and effective course content tailored to her students’ needs. She quickly saw the difference it made in her classroom, especially when students expressed relief and excitement at no longer having to purchase expensive textbooks. For many, that financial burden can be a major source of stress, and removing it allows students to focus more fully on their education. With all materials easily accessible through Blackboard, learning becomes more streamlined and convenient. As an instructor, Salazar appreciates the creative freedom OER provides, allowing her to combine materials from multiple sources to design more dynamic and enriching coursework. Through the process of adapting these resources, she has embraced the idea that change can lead to better outcomes for both educators and students. To her, being part of the OER movement is about giving students peace of mind and supporting their success by reducing financial barriers—while also demonstrating how flexible, diverse, and impactful open resources can be in creating a more engaging educational experience.
